GCBA has one of the richest public datasets that compiles different activities, from the number of hourly turnstile passes for all subway stations, to filming permits by production name and location, to the routes taken by bicycles belonging to the public bike system.
How do we start from an Excel series with thousands of rows (the largest has 6 million) to find stories?
Under the leadership of Argentine visualization designer Andrés Snitcofsky, with whom we worked together on the Cargografias open data project, we helped GCBA turn that data into living resources that generate stories.
Genosha worked during 2018 and 2019 together with Datos Abiertos GCBA to produce unique and memorable pieces, which allow a full use of open data. Thus they become a source of information in a didactic and dynamic way, within the digital or physical world. Una ciudad de Película was one of the first projects.
Scrollytelling that summarizes the cultural activities of the city of Buenos Aires, analyzing the geographical areas where they take place, their different disciplines, the distribution by districts and the times of the year in which they occur.
Using 360° cameras we created different types of interactions for both those who have VR devices and those who do not. This project was presented at the 3rd International Open Data Conference, held in Buenos Aires in September 2018. It sought to make open data tangible from an innovative stance.
To celebrate the 2018 World Cup, we created signage in the Buenos Aires subway based on historical traffic data from the stations. We compared how people behave on weekdays and what they do on match day. We found that some people were passing through certain stations right at the time of the goals.
These posters were placed in different high-traffic stations, where we hoped that by seeing them people would connect their daily commute with the key moments of the World Cup (perhaps even recognizing themselves in those seconds when the city was shouting GOAL).
Data tells stories, If we combine design, technology and moments, we will be able to create unique experiences for people in each city, providing a reflection of how infinite their day-to-day lives are.
